The Music

The recording of "That's All Right" by Elvis Presley at Sun Records in July 1954 is considered the starting point. What emerged there was faster, rawer, and more danceable than Country and closer to the guitar than Rhythm and Blues. Within a few years, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Gene Vincent, and Wanda Jackson followed.

Wanda Jackson is the figure most important for the connection between music and fashion. She performed in fringed dresses and high heels at a time when women on country stages were expected to wear demure western costumes. Her appearance showed that Rockabilly for women could be both feminine and self-confident.

The Youth Culture
